A story of growing up in the '60s with Vietnam affecting every young man's life, and of ultimately being caught up in the war and its aftermath.

Souvenirs of War One Marine War; An Entire Generation Story eBook William Murphy

Totally captivating, for this marine to have survived against all odds boggles the mind, while those around him were killed and terribly wounded.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand what fighting this war meant to the "grunts" in extended forward-field combat.

Murphy's experiences are so humbly told, one has to read between the lines to really appreciate the tragedy of Vietnam and the sacrifices of those who served and died in the late 1960's.

Especially moving was the author's uncertainty of surviving as his 13 months combat tour was coming to an end.

Souvenirs of War One Marine War; An Entire Generation Story eBook William Murphy Reviews

As a Korean War veteran, I see this book as a straight forward and realistic comparison of the Vietnam War. William Murphy has written in such a manner that the subject is not over emphasized or deemphasized. My experience with the Korean War itself was not as controversial as the Vietnam War was. In fact the public treated the military personnel in a very disrespectful manner and acused them of things that were completely out of their control. Today the American public is not completely in favor of the Iraq War but we are at least treating our military personnel in an honorable and respectful manner.
Bill Murphy spent virtually all of his time in Vietnam in 1968 in the jungle, a Marine "grunt." His book tells a story that most of these guys were not encouraged to tell after they came home. It is a well-written, humble account of one man's experiences.

So much has been written and talked of lately about the "Greatest Generation," but Murphy makes a good case for admiration of this next, great generation that weathered the divisive Vietnam War and brought about the successes of the Civil Rights Movement.

A great book for anyone interested in reading about the Vietnam War. It is a deeply personal book that also thoughtfully reflects upon the times.
William Murphy has written what is simply the best combat memoir of the Vietnam War. Souvenirs of War is a gripping, almost painfully poignant read throughout. As a fairly serious student of the war it is perplexing how only now I come upon this book, which belongs in the central canon for any study of it. By way of the most unflinching, admirably courageous and ultimately generous honesty, Mr. Murphy emerges as the E.B. Sledge of the Vietnam War.
Anyone who wants to read a thoughtful account of what it meant to serve our country during the Vietnam War will want this book. Written in a restrained, even stoic, Midwestern style, Bill Murphy accurately captures our collective past while writing about his own.

Some thoughts that struck me while reading Souvenirs of War

#1. The different way we treat our troops today, as opposed to how we treated those of the Vietnam era. I lived through that time, and we demonized them. Today, even if we do not agree with our war with Irag, we acknowedge the service and suffering of our troops.

#2. How many human lives our country wasted during the Vietnam War. It's a sad reflection, and the author captures the sadness behind the anger of the era.

#3. Acknowledgement of the work it takes to create a fulfilling life after war experiences - in a non-sensational, compassionate voice.

This is a must read for anyone comtemplating service in the armed forces, anyone who lived during the Vietnam War, and anyone who desires to get a feel for the era from a personal point of view.
I found the book a bit slow and very basic I was in the army from Sept 1967-Sept 1969 I did not serve in Vietnam but most of my friends who graduated from IOBC4 inn Dec of 1967 did
For those of us who grew up in the 60's and either experienced Vietnam firsthand or through the stories of families left here to wonder what was happening over there this book is a must read. For all others this book is a wake up call to things that are still in a way happening today. Great read.
If, like me, you have no real idea of the horrors of war nor what surviving one means for the rest of your life, this book will provide an eye-opening slap in the face. Bill Murphy relates and reflects on his own incredible experiences in Vietnam and his life thereafter, sharing in prose what is difficult or impossible for him and other veterans to share in conversation. I have always respected those who put their lives on the line for country or community, and this book has deepened that respect. Veteran's Day will mean more to me this year.
